Customers of internet provider, Zen Internet, will be delighted to hear that the company will upgrade to BT’s 21CN network, which is a precursor to making available broadband connections with an impressive 20 Mb speed, although it comes with a cautionary ‘up to’ tag. Nonetheless, the company has promised to give existing customers faster download speeds, while new customers can also enjoy such speeds as long as their areas are equipped with the new service.
The upgrade will be possible because of the company’s plans to shift to asymmetrical digital subscriber line two plus (ADSL2+) technology. In the early stages, existing customers will pay the same and get the same download and upload broadband services, but download speeds will later become much faster.
The customer’s distance from the local exchange will be one of the factors that will determine the speed, along with the standard of internal wiring and that of the wiring from the BT exchange to the customer’s home or office. So long as all these are in a good working condition, customers will enjoy average download speeds of 9-13 Mb, with a peak of 20Mb, as well as upload speeds of up to 1Mb (click for a broadband speed test).
However, these changes will take some time to implement. The company says that it won’t be until spring 2010 that customers on 21CN enabled BT exchanges will be moved over to the 20 Mb broadband services. This is due to the fact that the BT exchanges have a shortfall of engineers, working in each local exchange. The company currently estimates that it will take eight months to migrate the customers to the new service.
